That's according to Otago university researcher Christina Cleghorn, who says eating less processed and red meat could substantially reduce costs to the health system.
A new report suggests moving to more plant-based diets might reduce global mortality rates by six to 10 percent.
Bowel and colon cancer, diabetes and heart disease are all high risks associated with the consumption of too much processed and red meat.
Dr Cleghorn says the World Cancer Research Fund recommends eating less than 500 grams of red meat a week, while the Global Burden of Disease project suggests no more than 100 grams.
Dr CLeghorn says New Zealand is economically invested in the production of meat, which may be slowing the progress we could be making towards reducing average meat consumption.
