Waikato business leaders are backing plans for a new medical school in Hamilton

National's health policy would see a boost to Waikato University, in a bid to raise health workforce numbers.

Waikato Chamber of Commerce chief executive Don Good says the regions are struggling with doctors moving overseas, or retiring.

But he says Waikato Hospital is the largest in the southern hemisphere, so it makes sense to have people study there.
