Residents on the South Island's West Coast are in for a wet weekend

Severe weather warnings are in place for the ranges of northwest Tasman, Buller and Westland.

MetService Meteorologist John Law says locals should keep an eye on the forecasts, with surface flooding possible.

Law says while the heaviest rain will fall on higher ground, it could cause streams and rivers to rise.

He says those travelling in the area should be careful on the roads.
