Hutt City Council has announced flood-protection work is set to get underway this summer

Hutt City Council has announced flood-protection work is set to get underway this summer

Lower Hutt is the country's most densely populated flood plain.

The stop-bank between Melling Bridge and Mills Street is set to be raised 1 point 5 meters higher.

Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter says it reduces the risk of river overflow from a one-in-69 year event, to more than one-in-400 years.

He says while Hutt residents may get their feet wet one day, this work will make it far less likely.
