The suggestion comes as Australian Wayne Bennett's put his name forward for the Kiwis role.
That was vacated by compatriot Michael Maguire, who has taken charge of the New South Wales Origin side.
Former Kiwis coach Sir Graham Lowe says Bennett is the man for the job now, but he's hoping for stronger local-born candidates in future.
