Engineers behind the latest earthquake proofing tests say their work could help preserve cities

Technology testing by EQC and Kiwi research agencies at one of the worlds biggest earthquake labs, will wrap this month - having produced results those involved are calling 'stunning'.

Canterbury University Professor Greg MacRae says their friction technology dissipates earthquake energy, meaning only some parts need replacing in a severe shake.

He says the potential impact of this technology is huge, and could lead to cities not having to be pulled down after a major event.

It's being used in fewer than 10 buildings in New Zealand at the moment.
