In a New Zealand Medical Journal letter published today, Otago University PhD student Angie Hoskin and her supervisors say there's not enough data on the subject, to be sure.
They say little is known about women's suicidal behaviours.
Men have a greater rate of suicide, but women attempt suicide more often.
Hoskin says only India has robust research, and that's only in the last 30 years.
Hoskin and co says further research could inform evidence-based healthcare and prevention strategies.
