Police are confident there's no ongoing risk to the general public, after a rugby club's van was shot at as they fled a game in Hastings on Saturday afternoon

Police are confident there's no ongoing risk to the general public, after a rugby club's van was shot at as they fled a game in Hastings on Saturday afternoon

The Division Three game between Tamatea Arikinui and YMP at Bill Mathewson Park had to be abandoned due to safety concerns, and YMP players were chased and shot at as they left.

A photo shared with our newsroom shows the team's van is dented and has more than 50 bullet holes.

Hawke's Bay Area Commander Inspector Lincoln Sycamore says they've spoken to witnesses, and the incident appears to have been between gang members.

Tamatea Rugby Club says none of those involved were Tamatea supporters.
