Taylor Swift has hinted the breakdown of a relationship drove her to drink

The 34-year-old pop superstar has opened up about her turbulent love life on her new album 'The Tortured Poets Department' which was released on Friday (19.04.24) and she touched on a deeply personal struggle by declaring she was a "functioning alcoholic" in the lyrics of her new single 'Fortnight'.

In the song, she starts off by singing: "I was supposed to be sent away but they forgot to come and get me / I was a functioning alcoholic 'til nobody noticed my new aesthetic / All of this to say I hope you're okay, but you're the reason / And no one here's to blame but what about your quiet treason."

The lyrics seems to suggest she was struggling after the end of her six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn and she found solace in the arms of The 1975 star Matty Healy - who she dated briefly after her split from Joe.

She went on: "And for a fortnight there we were / Forever running to you / Sometimes ask about the weather."

Taylor added: "All my mornings are Mondays stuck in an endless February / I took the miracle move on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it's ruining my life (I love you, it's ruining my life) / I touched you for only a fortnight (I touched you) / But I touched you."

Prior to the album's release, the 'Bad Blood' singer confirmed 'Fortnight' - a collaboration with Post Malone - will be the lead single.

In a post on Instagram, she explained: "I've been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever.

"I got to witness that magic come to life first-hand when we worked together on 'Fortnight'."
