A tumultuous week has extended to the field for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in league's NRL

They've been thrashed 42-12 by the three time defending premiers Penrith - less than 48 hours after sacking coach Jason Demetriou.

The Rabbitohs scored the opening 12 points before the Panthers ran in seven unanswered tries.

Interim coach Ben Hornby admired the players' effort in the circumstances.

South Sydney remain last with one win from eight - while the Panthers sit second.
