Cheryl Cole collapsed on Mount Kilimanjaro after learning her husband had been arrested.
The Girls Aloud star – who is currently climbing the African mountain for British charity Comic Relief - broke down when she heard of soccer star Ashley Cole’s alcohol-fuelled bust up with police yesterday (05.03.09).
A source said: “She was very worried about what was going on at home. It’s the last thing she needed when she has to have all her mental strength to get through the next few days. She was really low in the morning but the rest of the team tried to cheer her up.”
Ashley, 28, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly following a row with police outside the Collection Club – a West London nightclub – in the early hours of yesterday morning.
It has been claimed the England ace became enraged after discovering a paparazzo had photographed him speaking to a mystery blonde beauty inside the club.
Ashley and his minders snatched the camera away from the photographer before stepping outside where the drunken sports star clashed with more paparazzi before launching his tirade against police.
Cheryl, 25, is distraught because Ashley promised not to party with teammates while she was away.
Another source said: “This is the last thing she needed. The cheating allegations last year almost ended their relationship. It only survived because Ashley agreed not to go out with his teammates, who Cheryl thinks are a bad influence on him because of all the attention they inevitably get from women.”
Last year, Ashley was caught out after bedding a blonde hairdresser.
Cheryl – who is currently suffering from altitude sickness - is being closely monitored by medics and has been given injections to help her cope.
She collapsed in her tent during an overnight stop and her bandmate Kimberley Walsh – who is also making the climb – screamed for help.
The shamed England soccer player was held in police cells until 5.30am when he was given an £80 fixed-penalty notice. He has since been fined £160,000 by his team Chelsea, for bringing the club’s name into disrepute.
He has since issued an apology to the arresting officers, saying: “I regret my actions and how it reflects on myself and Chelsea football club. However, I want to make it clear I swore in frustration at the paparazzi’s behaviour. I would never disrespect police officers in any way.”
