Recreational Marine: Bay of Islands Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 1330hrs Monday 20-May-2024 by MetService Situation: A front over the lower South Island weakens away today, as a complex trough moves onto the North Island from the Tasman Sea and affects the North Island into Tuesday, while a ridge of high pressure builds over the South Island. The trough moves eastwards on Wednesday to lie slow-moving to the east of the North Island dragging a showery east to southeast flow over the island through to Thursday. Meanwhile, a cold front reaches the far south late Thursday and travels up the South Island on Friday as a southwesterly flow strengthens over the country. Forecast issued at 1016hrs Monday 20-May-2024 Valid to 1 pm Monday for Bay of Islands Recreational Marine Area. Strong wind advisory. Monday: Easterly 25 knots gusting 35 knots, rising to northeast 30 knots gusting 40 knots for a time late afternoon and evening, then turning northerly 20 knots gusting 30 knots late evening. Rough sea easing later this evening. Cloudy. Poor visibility in rain, heavy at times, developing in the afternoon, with possible thunderstorms from evening. Easterly swell 1 metre, rising to 2 metres. Tuesday: Northerly 20 knots gusting 30 knots easing to northwest 15 knots late morning. Moderate sea easing late morning. Poor visibility in rain.
