    Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 1330hrs Monday 20-May-2024 by MetService

    Situation:
    A front over the lower South Island weakens away today, as a complex trough moves onto the North Island from the Tasman Sea and affects the North Island into Tuesday, while a ridge of high pressure builds over the South Island. The trough moves eastwards on Wednesday to lie slow-moving to the east of the North Island dragging a showery east to southeast flow over the island through to Thursday. Meanwhile, a cold front reaches the far south late Thursday and travels up the South Island on Friday as a southwesterly flow strengthens over the country.

    Forecast issued at 1016hrs Monday 20-May-2024
    Valid to 1 pm Monday for Inshore waters from Great Mercury Island to Mayor Island to Matakana Island.
    Strong wind advisory.
    Monday: Southeast 15 knots, rising to easterly 20 knots this afternoon, and to easterly 25 knots gusting 35 knots this evening. Sea becoming rough this evening. Fine at first, but becoming cloudy. Fair visibility in a few showers from afternoon, becoming more frequent in the evening. Northeast swell 1 metre rising to 1.5 metres.
    Tuesday: Easterly 25 knots gusting 35 knots rising to northeast 30 knots gusting 40 knots for a time before dawn. Easing to northerly 15 knots in the morning, to northwest 10 knots in the afternoon. Rough sea easing in the morning. Cloudy with poor visibility in periods rain, becoming heavy. Possible morning thunderstorms. Northeast swell 1.5 metres, rising to 2.5 metres, then easing to 1.5 metres.

    Outlook until midnight Friday:
    Wednesday: Northwest 10 knots, becoming southerly 15 knots in the morning. A few
    showers clearing to fine early. Easterly swell 1.5 metres, easing to
    1 metre. Northerly swell 1 metre developing for a time.
    Thursday: Southerly 15 knots, easing to variable 5 knots early. Becoming
    southwest 10 knots late. Fine. Easterly swell 1 metre.
    Friday: Southwest 10 knots, rising to 20 knots early. Partly cloudy. Easterly
    swell 1 metre.
