    Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 1915hrs Monday 20-May-2024 by MetService

    Situation:
    A front over the lower South Island weakens away today, as a complex trough moves onto the North Island from the Tasman Sea and affects the North Island into Tuesday, while a ridge of high pressure builds over the South Island. The trough moves eastwards on Wednesday to lie slow-moving to the east of the North Island dragging a showery east to southeast flow over the island through to Thursday. Meanwhile, a cold front reaches the far south late Thursday and travels up the South Island on Friday as a southwesterly flow strengthens over the country.

    Forecast issued at 1642hrs Monday 20-May-2024
    Valid to 7 pm Monday for Wellington Harbour and the south coast from Sinclair Head to Baring Head.
    Strong wind advisory.
    Monday: Southerly 10 knots. Sea slight. Cloudy periods. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre, easing to half a metre. For Castlepoint - Southwest swell 1 metre. Northeast swell 1 metre developing, then easing to half a metre.
    Tuesday: Southeast 15 knots, rising to 20 knots in the morning, and to 25 knots gusting 35 knots about the south coast in the afternoon. Sea becoming rough about the south coast in the afternoon. Partly cloudy, showers developing. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell half a metre. For Castlepoint - Northeast swell half a metre, rising to 2.5 metres. Southwest swell 1 metre, rising to 1.5 metres, then easing to half a metre.

    Outlook until midnight Friday:
    Wednesday: Southerly 25 knots, easing to 15 knots in the afternoon. Rain,
    turning to showers later. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay -
    Southerly swell half a metre, rising to 1.5 metres, then easing to 1
    metre. For Castlepoint - Northeast swell 2.5 metres. Southwest swell
    half a metre, rising to 1.5 metres.
    Thursday: Southeast 10 knots. Cloud lowering and rain developing later. For the
    South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre. For
    Castlepoint - Easterly swell 2.5 metres, rising to 3 metres, then
    easing to 2.5 metres. Southwest swell 1.5 metres, easing to 1 metre.
    Friday: Southerly 15 knots. Rain, clearing later. For the South Coast and
    Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre, easing to half a metre. For
    Castlepoint - Easterly swell 2.5 metres, easing to 1.5 metres.
    Southwest swell 1 metre.
