Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides passed 1bn mark

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' has surpassed the $1 billion mark at the international box office.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' has made $1 billion at the international box office.

The Rob Marshall-directed movie – the fourth in the film series starring Johnny Depp as drunken swashbuckler Captain Jack Sparrow – has now surpassed the benchmark figure since its release on May 20.

It has taken $233.7 million at the US box office and $774 million in the international market, making a total of $1.007 billion.

'On Stranger Tides' is now the third Johnny Depp movie take to take more than $1 billion, following on from the success of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' and 'Alice in Wonderland'.

It is also the fourth Disney project to surpass the $1 billion mark.

Johnny, 48, has previously revealed he could keep playing Captain Jack for as many films as was necessary because the character feels "limitless".

He said: "For me as an actor, it just feels like there's a lot more with the character that I can do, it feels limitless in a way."
