Gavin Hawthorn has killed four people in two different car crashes driving drunk in 2003 and 1989.
Earlier this year he was caught again at a checkpoint in Paraparaumu.
The 56 year old has been sentenced to six months home detention, 180 hours community service and has been banned from obtaining a license for two years.
Caroline Perry - from Road safety charity Brake - is calling for stronger sentences and a permanent loss of licence for serious repeat drink drivers.
She says given the history, this person could end up back on the road posing a danger again.
