The country's highest court has ruled against the company that's proposing a new open cast coal mine on the West Coast

The country's highest court has ruled against the company that's proposing a new open cast coal mine on the West Coast

Rangitira Developments took its long-running fight to the Supreme Court over its proposal to mine on reserve land near Westport.

Its resource consent was previously rescinded after a successful challenge by Forest & Bird.

Rangitira took the case to the top court after the Court of Appeal sided with Forest & Bird's view that the Reserves Act took precedence over the Crown Mineral Act ... to protect the land.

Today's decision has seen the Supreme Court unanimously dismiss Rangitira's appeal.
