A young man who admitted assaulting others at a Labour Party youth summer camp has permanent name suppression

A young man who admitted assaulting others at a Labour Party youth summer camp has permanent name suppression

In what may be a precedent setting decision, the Court of Appeal granted the suppression to protect him from internet vigilantism on social media.

The 22-year-old hasn't been identified since the criminal case sparked by sexual allegations after the event near Waihi in 2018.

The Court says social media is a toxic place, 'weaponised' to take out those deemed to have transgressed norms of online groups.

The man was discharged without conviction on both assault charges.
