A heavy rain warning for Buller has expired, as well as a heavy rain watch for Nelson.
Mount Garibaldi station in Buller recorded 135 millimetres of rain in the past 24 hours.
The Lewis Pass has seen 93 millimetres in 24 hours and Reefton has seen close to 50.
Metservice forecaster Rob Kerr says things have settled down a lot.
He says considering we were seeing 100 to 200 millimetres in the 24 hours before that, things have certainly backed off -- and things will continue to ease later today.
The North Island hasn't escaped the bad weather yet, with a heavy rain watch in place for the Central North Island, from Taranaki to Taumarunui.
