Weather experts are almost certain Westport was the wettest place in the country this month

Weather experts are almost certain Westport was the wettest place in the country this month

But MetService can't say for sure because the rain gauge broke during this month's major floods on the West Coast.

Nearby Hokitika's caught a whopping 315 millimetres so far -- and in the major centres, Wellington's up 80 percent and Auckland and Christchurch are well down.

Meteorologist Dan Corrigan says the Westport gauge wasn't recording for much of the extreme rain earlier this month.

He says the numbers were well up when it was working, so it's very likely Westport was the wettest centre.
