Two people have been taken to hospital after an ammonia leak at a freezing works near Oamaru

Emergency services were called to the Alliance Group Plant in Pukeuri at about 10.20pm last night.

The leak triggered the closure of State Highway one, which Police assisted with and forced workers to evacuate.

A St John spokesperson told NewstalkZB they transported two people to Oamaru Hospital, one in a moderate condition and one in a minor condition.

It's not yet clear what caused the leak.
