Timothy Taylor was sentenced to life in prison for murdering Lisa Blakie in February 2000.
The 20-year-old was killed as she hitchhiked from Christchurch to Greymouth.
Taylor appeared via audio visual link in the Christchurch District Court this morning.
He's been remanded in custody until January 12.
It's unclear what conditions Taylor may have breached.
