The Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes have provided key seismic risk data

The Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes have provided key seismic risk data

The latest national seismic hazard model has been released today.

It shows New Zealand's risk is 50-percent higher than thought a decade ago - when the last modelling was done.

GNS Science project lead Matt Gerstenberger says it's not surprising - given the latest up to date information.

He says they've taken what they've learned over the past 20 years about earthquakes to give probabilities of shaking over the next century.
