MetService says an unstable northwest flow with embedded fronts is expected to continue affecting New Zealand through into tomorrow morning.
Most parts of the country are waking up to wind and rain.
An Orange Heavy Rain Warning has been in effect overnight for Bay of Plenty east of Whakatane, and for the ranges of Gisborne and north of Ruatoria.
Heavy rain watches have been in place for much of Northland, the central High Country and Fiordland.
A strong swell warning remains in place for the Kapiti-Porirua Coast, from Otaki to Cape Terawhiti.
