One person has died after a major crash on State Highway two through the Athenree Gorge near Waihi

Twenty firefighters were called to the scene this afternoon, after eight people were trapped in two vehicles.

A Police spokesperson says two people are still in a critical condition in hospitals across the upper North Island.

Five others involved have moderate injuries.

The road has now re-opened after enquiries by the Serious crash Unit
