MetService confirms the coldest temperature this morning was at Pukaki Airport, near Twizel, which recorded -5.5C.

MetService meteorologist Amy Rossiter says other parts of the country reaching for the woollies were Taumarunui on -3.4C, Taupo on -2C and the usually warm Whakatane, on 2.1C.

She says that's quite cold for a beach town.

Aucklanders are also facing a chilly start to the day, with the city also recording its coldest day this year.

At 7am, it was 3.8C at Auckland Airport.
