New Zealand Food Safety is warning people not to collect or eat shellfish from near Tolaga Bay because of toxin concerns

Routine testing from Tatapouri Point just north of Gisborne, to Koutunui Point found biotoxin levels of shellfish was well over the safe limit.

Deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle says cooking them won't remove the toxin.

There have been no reports of illnesses from them yet.
