A more challenging period ahead for banks, but new lending could be on the horizon

ANZ has reported a seven percent drop in statutory profit, which includes gains and losses from economic hedges.

Last week, Westpac announced an 18 percent fall, and BNZ a 6.7 percent rise.

But Massey University banking expert Claire Matthews says the incoming Government's policies could favour banks.

She says the view seems to be that's likely to heat the housing market - and therefore lift prices.

Matthews says the loans people would need would then be bigger, and that would provide some opportunities for the banks.
