The airport's Plane Spotters' Park is opening specially for the occasion.
The United Airlines route, starting on December 10, will be the only direct flight between the South Island and the US, flying three times a week.
The last direct connection between the two was Air New Zealand's Christchurch to Los Angeles service, which ended in 2006.
Christchurch International Airport is opening its Plane Spotters' Park - effectively a paddock with a view behind the airport on Pound Rd - all day on December 10 to watch the inaugural flight touch down mid-morning.
