Meteorologists are keeping an eye on weather systems across the country, with severe weather watches in place for many parts, including Auckland

Meteorologists are keeping an eye on weather systems across the country, with severe weather watches in place for many parts, including Auckland

A severe thunderstorm watch comes into force early this afternoon , in the Auckland region and the Hawke's Bay and Tararua Districts.

Storms are predicted to produce localised downpours of around 25 to 40 millimetres an hour.

MetService Meteorologist Claire O'Connor says people should keep safe on the roads, in the areas where rain's expected.

She warns we're going to see rain through most of the western areas of the country for the rest of the day.

The weather is impacting flights in Nelson, and between Christchurch and Hokitika.

Air New Zealand says customers are being re-booked on the next 'available' service.
