Parts of Hawera in Taranaki are being evacuated as emergency services respond to a gas leak

The gas leak happened the intersection of Union and Nelson Streets.

Cordons are in place on those roads, as well as High Street, Grey Street, and Wellington Street.

Cordons are also in place near Countdown, and the intersection of Nelson and Princes streets.

People are being asked to avoid the area.
