An apartment fire -- which sent one person to Christchurch Hospital last week -- was sparked by an e-scooter

Emergency crews were called to the blaze on New Brighton Road near The Palms Shopping centre around 10pm last Tuesday.

A child was rescued from a second storey window and one person sustained serious injuries.

Fire and Emergency says it was accidentally caused when a charging e-scooter overheated and exploded.

A spokesperson says it's a reminder of why batteries shouldn't be left charging over prolonged periods.
