The Police watchdog has ruled an officer was justified in using pepper spray on a group of people in Northland two years ago

Police arrived at a fight outside Kaitaia's Awanui Hotel, involving a crowd of about 80.

One officer used pepper spray on a group of five - and twice sprayed one man acting aggressively, before arresting him.

The man claimed the spray was excessive and he wasn't offered treatment until arriving at the Police station.
