A Virgin Australia flight's been diverted to Invercargill after experiencing an issue shortly after taking off from Queenstown Airport

The plane took off at 6pm bound for Melbourne.

Members of the public report seeing flames coming from one of the engines and heard large bangs as the plane took off.

A spokesperson for the airline says they're aware of the incident and will release more information when they're in a position to do so.
