Rescuers are battling stormy conditions to retrieve two people seen alive off the coast of Gisborne

Rescuers are battling stormy conditions to retrieve two people seen alive off the coast of Gisborne

A fishing boat with three on board set off yesterday - but didn't return.

Maritime NZ says a container ship spotted a pair off Mahia Peninsula but lost visual contact.

They are trying to find them again.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre's Operations Manager, Michael Clulow, says atrocious weather is making the search extremely difficult.

He says the pair will be cold and tired - but didn't mention the third missing person.
