Drivers are being urged to be cautious as the Wellington region wakes up to surface flooding following heavy rain

NIWA's recording 30 millimeters of rain between five and seven this morning.

The rainfall's caused surface flooding in Porirua and the Hutt Valley - including East Porirua, Whitby, and areas near the Waiwhetu stream.

State Highway two at Petone is down to one lane northbound - and there are delays along State Highway 58.

Cars are being removed from the Hutt's Riverbank carpark - which has been shut.

A slip and a rockfall have shut State Highway 6 between Hira and Rai Valleys - closing the connection between Nelson and Blenheim.
