A Hamilton man has been sentenced to five months' home detention after blackmailing a man he'd met on a dating app

A Hamilton man has been sentenced to five months' home detention after blackmailing a man he'd met on a dating app

The victim met Kavinesh Lal on Tinder in September 2021, and agreed to pay him 80-dollars for performing a sexual act.

They didn't speak again until July 2022, when Lal threatened to expose the man's sexual preferences to his conservative family if he didn't pay more money.

Open Justice reports Lal extorted 13-hundred dollars from the man between July and April 2023.

Lal told Police he was struggling financially and knew it was wrong, and the judge told Lal he knew what he was doing in using the victim's family's conservative views to blackmail him.
