New data shows the generation of geothermal electricity hit a record high in the April to June quarter

MBIE's latest Energy Quarterly data shows new capacity at power stations near Taupo,helped generate enough to power all households across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne regions for a year.

This balanced an almost seven percent drop in hydro generation.

Renewable generation was also bolstered by a more than 48 percent increase in solar generation and an almost 18 percent increase in wind generation.

Coal generation was down just over 38 percent.
