Tate McRae has felt overwhelmed by the scrutiny she's faced

The 22-year-old pop star split from The Kid Laroi in July after about a year of dating, and Tate admits that she struggled to cope with the attention that subsequently came her way.

She told Rolling Stone magazine: "It was really scary and overwhelming, I would never talk that way, even about my friends' lives. I didn't realise how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life - because no one knows the full story of anything, ever.

"I also hate people painting a situation that's worse than it is. But what I've had to realise is that he's going to write songs and I'm going to write songs, and that's our way of expressing ourselves. That's our art, that's our job. And once it's out there, it's not mine anymore."

Tate admits that fame and attention has already taken a toll on her over the last 12 months.

She said: "I don't even recognise that person. I feel I've aged 10 years in the past year."

Earlier this year, Tate admitted that she finds comparisons to Britney Spears to be "flattering and scary".

Tate is a is a huge fan of the chart-topping icon - but she thinks it's currently unfair to compare her to Britney, one of the world's best-selling artists.

The singer told The Independent: "I find that flattering and scary.

"It's such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears. It's like comparing someone to Michael Jackson! That's the blueprint!"

Tate also believes female stars aren't given enough credit for their own success.

The Sports Car hitmaker reflected: "It's a tale as old as time. We've seen this with every single iconic female artist before.

"It's never just them who thought of the great idea or who came up with the music video, or who creatively directed the whole show."
