Civil Defence and marae have sprung into action, after flooding in Northland's North east region

Civil Defence and marae have sprung into action, after flooding in Northland's North east region

Northland Regional Council hydrologists have confirmed, 285 millimetres of rain was recorded in the six hour period, to 6am this morning.

Hundreds of homes are without power, about a dozen roads have been blocked or closed, and the ferry service from Russell to Paihia is out of action until further notice.

Roading crews will work 24 hour shifts to clear debris and restore access.

Acting Far North Mayor Chicky Rudkin, says their job is big enough and they don't need anyone making it harder.

She says people should stay off the roads and resist the urge to go for a look.
