A Dunedin police officer's tasering a drunk man while he was in custody in February last year has been found to be unjustified

A Dunedin police officer's tasering a drunk man while he was in custody in February last year has been found to be unjustified

Anastasia Hedge has more on the Independent Police Conduct Authority finding.

The officer was wearing her taser because she had expected to be assigned duties as a response officers.

She breached policy by wearing it into the custodial area when reassigned as a watch house keeper

The officer fired the taser twice at the man after he approached her - telling her to shoot.

Three other officers were in the cell at the time - and were trying to put the man in a tear proof gown.

Police have since updated their Taser policy to make it clear that staff must remove Tasers in custodial areas.
