Four people have been forced to climb out of their vehicles and wade through floodwaters to safety as heavy rain and gusty winds hit the Coromandel Peninsula

Three Fire and Emergency crews were called to help the stranded motorists on Hikuai Settlement Road just before 8pm.

Shift manager Craig Dally says the group were treated for mild hypothermia after getting themselves out of the water.

Meanwhile the Thames-Coromandel District Council says thirteen people are staying an extra night at the Pinnacles Hut and will be escorted down tomorrow.
