A coroner's calling for more steps to address safety at student parties, after the death of Otago student, Sophia Crestani, in 2019

A coroner's calling for more steps to address safety at student parties, after the death of Otago student, Sophia Crestani, in 2019

The 19-year-old died at an overcrowded party at a Dundas Street flat named The Manor.

Coroner Heather Mackenzie is recommending students do more to be responsible hosts at large parties.

Herald reporter Ben Tomsett says the University's being urged to reconsider its disciplinary approach for events breaching the Code of Student Conduct.

He says the tenants at the flat had several warnings from Police, Campus watch and noise control, regarding previous parties.
