The Government is hoping to roll out new enforcement protections for the Hauraki Gulf in the near future

The Government is hoping to roll out new enforcement protections for the Hauraki Gulf in the near future

It comes as changes to the Hauraki Gulf Marine Protection Bill, include establishing 19 new marine protection areas, nearly tripling the space protected.

Conservation Minister Tama Potaka says funding has been set aside through the Department of Conservation for protecting these new high protection areas.

He says there will also be some community enforcement to stop illegal fishing in marine reserves.

Potaka says they hope to roll out the changes by the end of the year.
