Alexander Zverev loses to Tallon Griekspoor in Indian Wells second round

On his sixth match point, Tallon Griekspoor completes a marathon three-set victory over world number two and Australian Open runner-up, Alexander Zverev.

Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor has upset top seed and Australian Open runner-up Alexander Zverev in a marathon second-round clash at Indian Wells in California.

Griekspoor collapsed in jubilation after converting his sixth match point to win 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4) after three hours and seven minutes on Stadium One court.

"I'm incredibly proud. It was such a mental battle to beat him," Griekspoor said after the match.

"I beat him once but then lost the next six times, so it was such a mental thing.

"I'm happy to finally get it out of the way."

Zverev served for the match in the second set but was unable to get over the line.

Griekspoor edged the world number two in the second-set tiebreaker to force a decider.

He failed to convert five match points at 6-5 in the third set but regrouped to win the deciding tiebreak.

It was Griekspoor's first win over a top-five opponent in 19 attempts.

Griekspoor will face France's 29th seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the third round.

Among other results in the men's draw, 26th-seeded Australian Alexei Popyrin defeated Belgian Zizou Bergs 7-6 (7/4), 7-5.

Popyrin will play Marcos Giron in the third round after the American downed fourth seed Casper Ruud 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 6-2.

His fellow Australian Chris O'Connell lost in straight sets to 28th seed Matteo Berrettini, 6-2, 7-6 (7/2).

Meanwhile, second seed and former world number one Iga Swiatek got past Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-0 in the second round of the women's draw.

Seventh-seeded Elena Rybakina also eased through to the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands.
