Concerns for North Island Brown Kiwi living on Kawau Island, north of Auckland - after survey results show low breeding success

Trained kiwi dogs detected 56 birds - all were adults, many in moderate to poor body condition - and no chicks or juveniles found.

A pest free operation is underway - working to restore their habitat and remove predators.

Auckland Council Environmental Specialist, Lisa Tolich says it's a step in the right direction.

She says nine out of 10 kiwis don't make it when predator control isn't in place.
