The Government is pouring cold water, on the idea of a bed tax in Auckland

The Government is pouring cold water, on the idea of a bed tax in Auckland

Mayor Wayne Brown has proposed a levy on accommodation providers, to go into promoting the region's tourism and fund major events.

Chris Luxon says he's not sure adding new taxes now is the right way forward, and a "bed tax" is certainly "not a priority".

The PM's also playing down the chance of Government funding for future SailGP events.

He says they'd need to be convinced they were getting a good return - and there would be a "high bar" to meet, given the state of the Government's books.
