    Tragedy in Canterbury yesterday, with the death of a woman at Rakaia River near Ashburton


    Emergency services were called after a group of six became stuck trying to cross the river-mouth on quad bikes.

    They were all recovered, with one dead and another in hospital with critical injuries.

    Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown says it's not the first death there.

    He says years ago, a fishermen got swept away by waves.
