Oscar Piastri qualifies on pole for F1 Bahrain Grand Prix

Australian Oscar Piastri will start an F1 grand prix from pole for the second time in his career, qualifying fastest in Bahrain for Monday's (AEST) race.

Australian Oscar Piastri will start an F1 grand prix from pole for the second time in his career, qualifying fastest in Bahrain for Monday's (AEST) race.

The Melbourne-born McLaren ace produced a blistering lap of 1:29.841 to qualify fastest ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Russell and Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli were both penalised one grid place each after stewards declared their teams sent them into the fast lane of the pits before the second qualifying session resumed following an earlier crash.

The Mercedes pair will start third (Russell) and fifth (Antonelli).

Piastri was a class above on Saturday in Bahrain, having also been the fastest in that day's practice session.

"“[It] felt like I’ve been comfortable all weekend, and there’s no better place to start than on pole,” Piastri said.

"[I] can’t thank the team enough for the car they’ve given me and I’m excited for the race tomorrow."

McLaren's drivers' championship leader Norris could not match his Australian teammate and was sixth fastest.

Defending champion Max Verstappen wrestled his Red Bull to seventh.

"I feel like I’ve just never driven an F1 car before. I’m struggling a lot, I don’t know why. I need to try and find some answers,” a frustrated Norris said.

"The car’s amazing. I have nothing to complain about. The car, the team are doing an amazing job, Oscar’s on pole by a good chunk."

McLaren dominated the time sheets during both of Friday's free practice sessions.

Piastri and Norris each topped a practice session, as McLaren appears set to continue their early season form.

The McLaren duo have each won a grand prix but had to settle for the minor podium places last week in Japan as defending world champion Verstappen triumphed for Red Bull Racing.
