    The Tall Ferns basketballers have been beaten by China in their Olympic qualifier in West Auckland.

    New Zealand lost 94-71, with captain Kalani Purcell leading all scorers with 21 points.

    The Tall Ferns play South Korea today.



    Wellington, Central Districts and Northern Districts have won their respective Hallyburton Johnstone Shield women's one day cricket openers.

    The Blaze have beaten Auckland by 66 runs after finishing their innings on 208 for five, before dismissing the Hearts for 142.

    The Hinds have eased to a 73 run win over Otago after bowling the sparks out for 125.

    An unbeaten knock of 123 from Caitlin Gurrey's helped the Spirit chase down 262 for a five wicket victory over Canterbury.
